Earlier this year, I had the incredible opportunity to showcase my work at the Brown Sugar Art Gallery’s exhibition at the Chelsea Atlantic Art Gallery! It was the perfect setting for me to unveil my mixed-media piece, "You remind me of a goddess: born of the river, crowned by the sun."
As a child, I was completely captivated by Greek mythology, thanks to shows like Hercules and Xena. The enchanting tales of gods and goddesses ignited my imagination. As I grew older and began to explore my spirituality and proudly reconnect with my Afro-Caribbean roots, I learned about our own powerful goddesses—and that has been truly transformative. This painting is a heartfelt tribute to Oshun, the Yoruba goddess of beauty, sensuality, creativity, love, and abundance. I wanted to honor her divine essence in the same way the West venerates figures like Aphrodite or Venus. Every element of the piece is thoughtfully crafted: the flowing river, the radiant sun halo, sacred shells, and hand-placed gemstones.
Rooted in Afro-Caribbean spirituality and the divine feminine, my work weaves together celestial textures, oceanic tones, and rich ancestral symbols. This exhibition was a significant milestone in my artistic journey—an exciting chance to deepen my visual expression, celebrate my heritage, and create a piece that resonates with themes of lineage, liberation, and brilliance. I’m so grateful for this experience!
